![]() Trouble Shooting1. Cannot connect to DCNet2000. a ) If your computer has been running all day or overnight, reboot and try your connection again. b ) If connection fails after booting the computer, check (i) the phone line is OK, (ii) phone line is plugged into modem and (iii) modem configuration (see below). Determine what type of modem you have, medium speed (14.4 or 33K) or high speed (LTWin modem, Kflex, X2, V.90, or Standard modem. Double click on "My Computer", then "Control Panel" and "Modem". The medium speed modems will have their speed within their names like 14400, 28800 or 33000. For high speed modems, check the name for "LTWin", "Kflex", "X2", "V.90", or "Standard modem". For medium speed modemsi - Check area code & phone numbers From your desktop, double click on "My Computer" and "Dial-up Networking". There should be one of two different icons visible, either "DCNet2000 short cut" for MS Internet Explorer or "Dial username account" for Netscape. Using the right mouse button, click once on that icon, this will bring up a short menu. Click the left mouse button on the last menu item, "Properties". The telephone number should be 281-791-2210/281-791-2211/281-791-7777 if you live north of beltway 8 and 713-554-2210/713-554-2211/713-554-2212/713-554-2213 and 713-554-7777 everywhere else in the Houston area. The box labeled "use area code and dialing properties" should NOT be checked. If it is, click on the name or the box to uncheck it. ii - Check modem speed (baud rate for low speed modems). From the "properties" window you were using above, look below at the "Connect using" section, click on "Configure". Under the "General" tab, look at the bottom under "Maximum speed". Check the number in this window, if it's not 38400, click on the down arrow on the right and then click on 38400. Close the "Configure "window by clicking on OK. Close the "DCNet2000 properties" window by clicking on OK. Close the "Dial Networking" window, click the X in the upper right corner of the window. From your desktop, double click on "My Computer" then the "Control Panel". Find the "Modem" icon, it looks like a yellow telephone, and double click the icon. There are three buttons in the middle of this window, from left to right, "Add", "Remove" and "Properties". Click on "Properties". Look at the bottom of this window under "Maximum speed". Check the number in this window, if it's not 38400, click on the down arrow on the right and then click on 38400. Close this window by clicking on OK. Close the "Modems properties" window by clicking on "Close". Close the "Control Panel" window, click the X in the upper right corner iii - Reboot computer and attempt connecting again.
For high speed modemsi - Check area code & phone numbers From your desktop, double click on "My Computer" and "Dial-up Networking". For Kflex and Standard Modems: The telephone number should be713-554-2210 & 713-554-7777 for Houston or 281-791-2210 & 281-791-7777 for Houston North Suburban . If the modem still won't connect, add 3 commas to the end of the phone number, for example 7135542210,,, or /7135547777,,, For LTWin, X2 and V.90 modems The telephone number should be 713-554-2211, 713-554-2212 & 713-554-2213 for Houston or 281-791-2211 for Houston North Suburban For all modems, the box labeled "use area code and dialing properties" should NOT be checked. If it is, click on the name or the box to uncheck it. ii Check modem speed (baud rate for Flex, X2, and V.90). From the "properties" window you were using above, look below at the "Connect using" section, click on "Configure". Under the "General" tab, look at the bottom For Kflex and Standard modem Check the number in this window, if it's not 57600, click on the down arrow on the right and then click on 57600. If this does not give you maximum speed, you may try at 115200. For X2 and V.90 modems Check the number in this window, if it's not 115200, click on the down arrow on the right and then click on 115200. For LTWin modem Check the number in this window, if it's not 115200, click on the down arrow on the right and then click on 115200. If you have already tried 115200 with no success, you can also try 57600. Close the "Configure" window by clicking on OK. Close the "DCNet2000 properties" window by clicking on OK. Close the "Dial Networking" window, click the X in the upper right corner of the window. From your desktop, double click on "My Computer" then the "Control Panel". Find the "Modem" icon, it looks like a yellow telephone, and double click the icon. There are three buttons in the middle of this window, from left to right, "Add", "Remove" and "Properties". Close the "Modems properties" window by clicking on "Close". Close the "Control Panel" window, click the X in the upper right corner of the window. iii Reboot computer and attempt connecting again. 2. My connection is unstable, downloading is slow or it won't download. Is this a new problem? How long ago was your connection working properly? a ) For a new problem or connection was working fine until recently: b ) The problem has existed since getting the DCNet2000 account: it's a network problem i - Check for conflicting network components From your desktop, double click on "My Computer" then the "Control Panel". Find the "Network" icon and double click it. Under the tab labeled "Configuration", check the network components that are installed. There should only be three of them, "Microsoft family logon" or "Client for Microsoft Network", "Dial-up adapter" and "TCP/IP". If there are any others, such as "AOL", select them by clicking on them once then clicking the "Remove" button. ii - Check TCP/IP configuration Double click the TCP/IP name, then click OK, this will bring up a TCP/IP Properties window. Under the IP Address tab, select "Obtain an IP address automatically". Under the DNS Configuration tab, select "Disable DNS". Under the Bindings tab, select "Microsoft Family Logon" or "Client for Microsoft Network". Under the Gateway, Advanced and Net BIOS tabs, there should be no entries. Under the WINS Configuration tab, select "use DHCP for WINS resolution" Close the TCP/IP Properties window by clicking on OK. Close the Network window by clicking on OK. You will get a window informing you that your system must be restarted in order for your changes to take effect, "do you want to restart now?" Click "NO", we will restart later. Close the "Control Panel" window by clicking on the X in the upper right corner. iii - Check dialing/modem properties From your desktop, double click on "My Computer" then "Dial-up Networking". There should be one of two different icons visible, either "DCNet2000 short cut" for MS Internet Explorer or "Dial username account" for Netscape. Using the right mouse button, click once on that icon, this will bring up a short menu. Click the left mouse button on the last menu item, "Properties". Click on the "Server Types" tab. There should only be two boxes checked, "Enable software compression" at the top and "TCP/IP" at the bottom. Click once on any other boxes to uncheck them. iv - Check TCP/IP settings Now, click once on the "TCP/IP Settings" button at the lower right. Select "Server assigned IP address" at the top. Next, select "Specify name server addresses". For "Primary DNS", enter 204.2.53.2 and for "Secondary DNS" or "alternate DNS" enter 204.2.53.3 At the bottom, check "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network". v - Close windows and reboot Click OK to close the TCP/IP settings. Click OK to close Network window. Click X in the upper right corner to close the "Control Panel" window. Click "Start" in the lower left hand corner, then click "Shut Down" and "Restart the computer".
